Having read Stephen Ambrose's extremely biased, pro-American accounts of the war in Western Europe in 1944-1945, it was a magnificent feeling to get the hold of this book, which is thoroughly honest and objective. True, the author may be a bit too critical of American leadership, and especially of Omar Bradley, but the book is nevertheless immensely informative and a very good read. Moreover, McKee's never boring, with his great humour and ironic comments. For every student of WW2 history, this book is a must read. It gives a graphic account of nearly every aspect of war; the savage fighting, the frustration, the sorrow, the suffering and of course of the true courage that is so typical of the British soldier. The book also gives an honest and fair description of perhaps the greatest general of the time, Sir Bernard Montgomery, and why he found it so difficult to work together with men like Eisenhower and Patton, who envied him desperately and constantly tried to sabotage his plans.
