Radix - Radix, Bk 1
Author: A. A. Attanasio
'Radix' is a saga of a far-future Earth in which mutation has gone rampant after a cosmological cataclysm. Lead character Sumner Kagan starts off as a screwed-up, homicidal, obese urban teenager. Through the several hundred pages, he transforms into a battered-but-charismatic hero and troubled demigod.

I loved this book! It is part a loosely connected 4 book series, but I think it is the strongest of Attanasio's early work and certainly stands alone. Attanasio has become more "famous" recently for his retelling of the Arthurian legend--this is NOT one of those books!
