The Rainbow
Author: D. H. Lawrence
"The Rainbow is, in many ways, unique among D. H. Lawrence's novels. It contains, as Richard Aldington puts it, 'a serenity and leisureliness which are absent from his first three novels and did not survive the First Worls War and the persecution inflicted on him for writing this literary masterpiece.'"

People make plenty of jokes about the metaphors and writing of D.H. Lawrence. Even the author himself thought his work rather schlocky but once you get past the rather blatant metaphors you have at the heart a rather terrific story that covers multiple generations and also the callous and tender side of the human spirit. I think he also showed that the Victorians weren't a bunch of staid prudes but were passionate feeling people who were sexually excited just like now. The books is heart-breaking and gloomy in periods but there is such a sense of yearning by the characters that you feel yourself to be a part of the experience.
