But before I do so, I must, however painful to my own feelings, and however presumptuous it may appear in the eyes of any here, express my great surprise at, and my deep and decided dissatisfaction with, the course which the Hon. the Deputy-Chairman, Sir James Law Lush- ington, thought proper to adopt yesterday, for the purpose, as it seemed to me, of checking the progress of free discussion in this Court, by telling us that the privilege we were then enjoying, if not most temperately used, might Here Mr. Weeding rose, and expressed his wish to know, if the Court would tolerate the hon. Proprietor in the reading of a speech. (Cries of " Order, order," and " Go on.") Mr. Thompson resumed. When the hon. gentleman who has just interrupted me shall be better acquainted with my usual practice as a public speaker, and with the use which I generally make of such interpositions as his, he will not again call me to order for reading my speech. Will the hon. gentleman permit me to ask him, if lie ever called an hon. Director to order for reading his speech, or any part of it ? I will undertake to say he never did. In a volume by my side, I have printed copies of speeches read to this Court, none of which were ever broken in upon, that I am aware.
