This book looks like a book for older children, and in fact the Library of Congress says it is a juvenile - BUT DON'T BE DECEIVED! The book is full of murder, rape and torture! A Viking raid on an Anglo-Saxon village and abbey is told through the eyes of 17-year-old Lidsmod on his first Viking journey, and 12-year-old Wiglaf, who is learning the healing arts in the abbey, and is captured by the Vikings, destined to be a thrall when the Vikings return home to Norway. Although Wiglaf does get free, the reader gets no sense that murder, rape and torture are not worthy activities. That said, it is well-written and definitely worth reading, if you can stand the violence.
