This is a story of a man's search for meaning in a chaotic world. People who would like this novel: Maugham fans, skeptics, malcontents, cheerful pessimists, yoga enthusiasts, and kool kats who want an introduction to the Vedantist belief system. The novel is rather didactic, but readers (like me) who like monologues and mini-essays in novels won't mind. This was a best-seller in 1944, a time of war and instability, but its enduring appeal to today's seekers, beatniks, dreamers, etc. etc. keeps it in print.
