i just received a wl offer from another member. i accepted the request from them and then ordered a 2nd book from the member's bookshelf. within minutes the member canceled the wl book order because of my RC's.  the other book i ordered from them is still on my account page waiting for member. the reason the member gave for not sending was this:

Member's Reason:

I will not swap with you. Your conditions are overboard and rude.

so my question is are my RC's really that over the top?

here are my requester conditions

for hardcovers if they originally had a dust jacket I want them with a dust jacket.

Wrap all books in plastic. in addition to a bubble envelope (if you are using one ) I live in Wi and our winter months can be really wet and rainy so this  is a must. ( baggie, plastic grocery etc can be used) please and  thank you.

ex-library books are fine as long as they are in good shape and the binding is tight.

Please make sure that all books meet the PBS Guidelines thank you. Please no books that are in smoking home/environment (current home)

any advice on how i can avoid responses like this one to my RC's in the future are much appreciated thank you.

Your RC is not rude - "overboard" is a matter of opinion and you found someone who has a strong opinion. Most of us don't feel these are onerous requests! There is no reason for a poster to be rude when rejecting your RC. The one change I would make is the phrase "in good shape". That is too vague, so I might change it to "as long as they have a tight binding, no cover creases and only shelf wear." Still some wiggle room, but clearer, you know?

It sounds pretty decent to me, my only changes to the RC would be largely cosmetic, but I'll go ahead and include them anyway in case anything sounds good.

Original

for hardcovers if they originally had a dust jacket I want them with a dust jacket.

Suggestions

For hardcovers if they originally had a dust jacket I want them with a dust jacket.

Please wrap all books in plastic (baggie, plastic grocery etc can be used); I live in Wi and our winter months are really wet and rainy.

Please no books that are in smoking home/environment (current home)

ex-library books are fine as long as they are in good shape and the binding is tight, basically just the PBS Guidelines.

Thank you!

I fell like "this is a must" might have rubbed them the wrong way and I'd note if the smoking clause is due to an allergy to cigarette smoke, which I mention because I've seen a lovely member that declines "smoke" RCs due to a woodstove in their house, which is entirely valid and quite well thought out, but it did make me realize that we could swap, I just needed to be more specific so that they weren't bound by a portion of my request that wasn't meant for their situation.

Some people will decline any RC at all...

I didn't find your RCs rude at all, but the response was.

I agree with Renee's suggestions, however some people just refuse all RCs even if the book meets them.

thanks for all the great comments.  i am still waiting for this member to cancel the other book that i requested from them since they will not swap with me. lol i think they are going to leave me waiting until the book time's out lol. which is funny since the 2nd (non-wl) book i requested from them is the only one posted in the system. i would have canceled it by now. it'll be interesting to see what happens with that book.

Your RCs are fine. However, if you are asking for suggestions ... I removed the ones that PBS already has as part of the conditions (people don't like to be told to do what they already know), and it doesn't matter why a book is unpostable (RCs vs. PBS rules, the treatment in PBS is exactly the same anyway) so you don't need to repeat rules that are already specified in PBS. You could also consider also removing the RC about ex-library books, as they are ALREADY fine to post here and must meet the PBS guidelines anyway.

Old:

Hi!

For all books:

  1. Please, no books that are currently in a smoking home (if you don't know the history that is OK).
  2. Please wrap books in plastic in addition to the outer wrapper, I live in WI and the weather can be very wet and rainy.

For hardcovers only:

  1. If it came with a dust jacket originally, I would like it to have the dust jacket.

Thank you very much!

This is only my personal thing but I would reject this request also. I don't like being told to wrap a book in plastic. But that is just me.

I don't think it is rude but I think you gave received good suggestions for help.

I will send if I meet the requirements that a member has set up.  But if there is something vague it makes it harder.   I also find long ones harder to understand.  While yours is not the longest I have seen or sent too it may help to trim it down some.

I liked your RC, it's very clear what you want without being annoying.  I do agree with Renee about shortening the plastic request.

Charles, you obviously haven't received a book completely waterlogged (dripping and soggy) from a mishap while in transit.  In my case the book was wrapped in plastic and without damage...the wrapper was so wet I have no idea how USPS read the label to deliver it.  I've been a believer ever since.   I did have one person request no plastic due to a local climate so hot it melted the plastic the the books.
