okay, so I have one RC: I am not willing to accept books that are currently in a smoking home. Pretty common request. Someone declined due to my requestor conditions, stating this: Book is used. Whaaat?.......I was under the impression they were all used.... |

They are most likely referring to the fact that they can't guarantee the book has never been in a smoking home due to it being a used book. In other words, totally disregarding the word currently in your nicely worded RC. I would just forget them and move on. Pam |

I agree with Pam but I'm going to add..if the book has any type of odor, many won't send it. They're nervous that they'll have a rwap on their hands..

Some members just deny to anyone with an RC. I have RC and rarely get declined but I had two this week as both were smokers. |

I agree with Pamela. Completly disregarding your RC. Likely because they bought it used, can't certify no smoke exposure; and they fear a super-sniffer will detect smoke and demand their credit back. I did something similar this morning. Declined a nicely worded request not to mail books that smell of smoke. It smelled fine to me but my sense of smell is attrocious, and most of my books are secondhand. So unless the rc is similar to yours specifing books currently in a non-smoking home I usually decline smell RCs Last Edited on: 2/16/15 4:50 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

I have a non-smoking home, but many times I can tell that a book came from a smoking home if I got it used. I won't send them to someone who has a non-smoking RC if I feel like the book still has some odor to it. |

It doesn't bother me, I just thought it was funny. I suppose others have gotten stranger replies (you can't let it bother you if somone declines.) |

I had a transaction once where a book was requested with non-smoking RC. It was in like new condition but used. I grew up in a smoking home but don't smoke myself. Neither does my husband. I know what smoke smells like but I had guests the night it was requested. I had four different people smell the book and all agreed it did not smell like smoke. When it got to the requester, I was informed that there was a problem with my book. The requester claimed that the book reeked of so much smoke that it had to be quarantined in a ziploc. It was complete and utter BS but it was my word against theirs. To this day if there is a smoking condition on a book, I won't send it. I try to word my decline as nicely as possible. One bad apple spoils the bunch. |

I declined an RC like yours once because I had just gotten the book from E Bay in a group of books. I already had a copy so I posted the E Bay book. Since I had only had the book for a day, I didn't feel I could risk accepting that RC since I have a bad sense of smell. |
