What do I do?
I received a book that has the same title as the book I requested, but a different author so obviously a totally different book.

The book I requested was a wish list book, so I'm a little annoyed that I now have to go back to the end of the wish list because someone either listed or sent the wrong book.  I sent the member a PM to let her know and she's insisting that the book I received was the one requested.  It's obviously NOT, because my "My Account" page shows the book I requested, not this one.

Help!  I've never had a problem like this, so I don't know what to do.

Thanks.

Does the ISBN on the book you received match the ISBN on the book listing you ordered? If not, you haven't received the book you ordered, and I believe you should not mark it received at all - check the help docs for "wrong book sent" resolutions. Since you didn't receive it, I believe you will go back into first place in the WL. When I got a RWAP on the WL, I was put back in the list to receive it.

If it is the same ISBN, then you ordered the wrong book, and should mark it received. Since you say your account shows the other book by the other author, sounds like this person listed their book wrong and should not get a credit for it. I know others will chime in with the right info for you!

the ISBN and author have to match.

Don't mark it received since you didn't receive the book you asked for originally.  I would PM the sender explain that you received the wrong book from them and ask them to refund your credit or send you the right book.  Then you can mark the book received with a problem. They'll get the credit that PBS is holding in escrow but you'll have your credit back from them.  If they want the book back they need to send you 2 credits-1 to replace the book you didn't get and 1 to cover postage.  You can contact PBS to put you back to your place in line because of the RWP.

It sounds to me like they saw the title and that it was WL and didn't pay attention to anything else.

ETA: if you get no response from them or they refuse to refund your credit-you'll get it back when the book you ordered goes lost. If it goes lost then you'll go back to your previous position in the WL line.

Thanks for the replies.  I already marked it as received with a problem - wrong book.  Maybe I shouldn't have???  This has never happened to me so I didn't know what to do.

She says the book I received is the one that was requested.  Not according to my account and my transaction archive.  The title is the same, but author & ISBN are different from the one I requested.

In my opinion, this is a RWP- wrong book received. To not mark it as received you'd have needed to receive a completely wrong book as worded below If you receive a book you did not request at all (totally wrong title), please see I received a book I didn't request! for instructions. Since the title matches, btt none of the other points it is a wrong book received. If you mark the transaction as RWP, you will go back to your previous spot in the WL right away. If you decide you are going to follow the "I received a book I didn't request" statement and not mark it as received, then you will need to wait the 26 days to lost in the system before you will be returned to your previous place in the WL.

 From the Help Center:

Wrong-book transactions:

A "wrong book" at PBS means a book that does not match its listing in the PBS Database in one or more of the FOUR necessary aspects:  ISBN, Title, Author and Booktype.

  • Nothing else about a listing needs to match
  • cover image does not have to match
  • Publisher does not have to match
  • Publication date does not have to match.

If you receive a book you did not request at all (totally wrong title), please see I received a book I didn't request! for instructions.

Please note the special case of Large Print: Large Print is not a booktype at PBS, and does not show on the Book Listing Preview while posting a book.  If the ISBN matched the book being Posted, and the words "Large Print" were not in the title, and was not categorized as Large Print in the database, the sender may not have known when posting this book that this listing had been listed as Large Print genre at PBS.  This sometimes happens when publishers assign the same ISBN to both Large Print and regular-font editions of a book.

A Wrong Book is also a book that was inappropriate for posting at PBS (but not because of its condition): for example, an Advanced Reader Copy, or a leaflet/pamphlet/booklet without ISBNs.

At this point Michelle, can you copy and paste the ISBN, Author information into a PM and send it to them along with the Help Center info that states all 4 of those must match or it is a RWP official problem and the credit should be returned on official problems?

Also, you should see yourself back to your previous spot in the WL, if not, use the Contact Us link and ask them to move you back there, they will.

Michelle sez:

<<I already marked it as received with a problem - wrong book.  Maybe I shouldn't have???>>

Nope, that was the right thing to do.  As Melanie pointed out, this is a "wrong book" not a "book I didn't request" situation, so you do have to mark the book received to keep your own account in good standing.  Melanie's already given all the good advice about how to contact the sender and clarify the issue.  Sometimes newer members post solely by title, rather than ISBN as they should, and it can lead to situations like this.

One thought regarding the author; could it be an older edition by an author that uses pen names, etc, and they used different names in the editions (but the publisher used the same ISBN)?  If the ISBN doesn't match, it is a moot point, though.

Cheers,
Catt

Thanks for all of the help!
After a bunch of PM back & forth, the sender refunded my credit and PBS moved me back to the front of the Wish List.  Sooooo... all's well that ends well, I guess.

Maybe, next time you can take an actual scan of the book and send her the link to view the picture of it. Places like photobucket.com have free picture hosting. It's what most of us use to display pictures on line. Surely, she can recognise her own book she sent. You know the old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case, it would be PMs.
