I received the wrong wishlist book from a sender.  I have asked for a credit refund but she says she can't give it to me b/c I haven't marked it received. I would like to know before I proceed if it is true that if  I acknowledge it received w/ problem that it won't go back on my wishlist with the No. 1 position? What would you guys recommend. Hopefully somebody will know the answer.

If you received a completely different book than the one you requested, then do not mark the book received.  The book will eventually be declared lost by PBS and you will get your credit back and be returned to the same place in the WL line that you were at when the book was offered to you.

ETA: If you received the wrong form of the book, i.e., you received a PB when you should have gotten a HC, then you can mark the book RWAP-Wrong book. This will return you to your previous place in the WL line. It will, however, not refund your credit. You will have to ask that the sender return your credit.

It sounds to me as if, in this instance, you would mark it "received with a problem--> wrong book".  Then ask for your credit back.  (She can't return your credit until it is marked received.)  Or, if it's the totally wrong book, then she probably mixed up two orders.  Follow the instructions in the help doc below, and wait to mark the book received until you get the right book.  Once you've marked it "wrong book", check your wish list.  If you are not back in line, you can contact the PBS Team and ask them to return you to your wish list spot.

The only instances when we can choose not to mark a book received at all are

1) if we receive 2 copies of the same book due to one sender not marking the book mailed

2) if we receive 2 copies of the same book because one sender mailed the book but canceled the transaction

(see I received 2 copies of the same book!)

3) or if we receive an empty envelope (no book at all) -- see I received an empty wrapper--no book inside!

If a sender has mixed up two orders, or sent the wrong one but is in the process of sending the right one, we can wait to mark the book received until the right book arrives:  "the sender can provide the addresses in Personal Messages.  When each of you get the correct books, you can mark them received." (see I Received a book I didn't Request)

If there's no hope of getting the right book, though, mark it "wrong book" based on the fact that the ISBN, author, binding or title didn't match.

There's a quote from this Help Doc:

There is a problem with a book I received!

"

  • If you received a book you did not request (not just the wrong version of a book you DID request but a title you do not recognize), you should NOT mark the book received - you should PM the sender as described in I received a book I didn't request!.
    • this may have been a mixed-up request and can be easily rectified."

So if it turns out to be easily rectified, then you would wait until the book arrives to mark it received.  If she doesn't have the right book to send you because, for instance, it's the wrong version of the book you ordered, mark it "wrong book" so that she can refund your credit.

But if she's not sending you the right book, then here's the definition we use when we mark a book "received with a problem" --> "wrong book":

A "wrong book" at PBS means a book that does not match its listing in the PBS Database in one or more of the FOUR necessary aspects:  ISBN, Title, Author and Booktype.

  • Nothing else about a listing needs to match
  • cover image does not have to match
  • Publisher does not have to match
  • Publication date does not have to match.

And here's some Help Doc info on not just letting the book "go lost."

"It is important to mark books received as promptly as possible after receiving them.  It is never acceptable not to mark a book received if it has been received.   This is a cardinal rule of the club."

(from What to do when your book arrives)

Thanks for taking the time to reply!!!!!

I went a head and marked book received but with problem (wrong book).  The book was placed back on my wishlist at its original position.  Now I am just waiting to receive my credit back from the sender.  She seems understanding so I not too worry. Again thanks :)
