Related to another thread about receiving "illegal" business materials from a PBS member-----

would you find it wrong If I sent you a holiday card and in it thanked you for swapping with me? (I would have your address only due to a recent book swap)

Or would you consider this misuse of the address also?

FYI:  people active in the RAOK, care & share, or coupon train forums send each other stuff all the time in the mail so we are OK with using an address for cards too.

I think it might be a media mail issue more than anything else.

Sorry, but you would be going against the Term of Use of the site. You are not allowed to include anything with the book and you are not allowed to use the address for sending anything other than the book. It seems like a nice thing to do, but it just isn't allowed to protect members who want their privacy. You would need to get permission from the members prior to sending it (which is what the RAOK, trains, card swapping, etc does).

I'm not comfortable getting cards from people I've traded with. I've sent out a ton of books, and the thought of getting that much stuff from strangers I don't remember is really, really scary.

The site is set up so that address aren't accessable after a trade, so I feel it's really creepy for someone to have kept my address after a trade long enough to send me a card for something else.

I'm comfortable giving out my address for a book trade, then I don't think it's anyone's business and don't want it saved, kept or listed by people privately.

Now, if  was in a game or club and it was common to send stuff outside of PBS and made clear to the members, I'd have no problem with that.

But not keeping an address from a book trade.

A nice thought Jeanne, but like Melanie posted I think it's against Terms of Use.

That said, I interact with a genre group here.  We have exchanged information for this type of thing ... but we submitted contact info amongst ourselves, not pulling from PBS transactions.

I would be a little creeped out about people keeping my address after they sent me a book.

Oh, I was thinking you meant to include it with a book. Yes, if I just randomly received a card from someone I traded with I would not be pleased. I don't like the idea of people holding on to my address, either.

Well, it wouldn't occur to me to keep anybody's address after a swap, but on the other hand, I really don't think I would care if someone sent me a card for the holidays, after the fact.

I would not be scared of that, or think it was creepy. Unless it had some kind of creepy message in it.

Yeah, against the ToS.  And, yes, I would be a little freaked out.

Your sentiments are kind, Jeanne, but it isn't permitted.  Per the Help Center "How do I contact another member?":

"Note:  It is not all right to contact a member by means outside of the Personal Message system, unless he or she has given you permission.

--We know that the Internet contains search engines which can permit access to private information such as telephone number, but it is NOT OKAY to use information obtained in such a manner to contact another PBS member.
--If such contact is initiated without the express permission of the other member and the other member complains, you will recive a warning. If the offense is repeated, or if any such contact is harassing (even if it is a first offense), your PBS account will be terminated permanently."

Folks doing RAOKs and things have consented to be sent those things -- folks that ordered a book from you sometime in the past did not.

There is a PBS Holiday Card Swap you can participate in, over in the CMT forums: http://www.paperbackswap.com/PBS-Holiday-Card-Swap-Sign/topic/247920/

If I didn't "know" you, we've just had a transaction on PBS, I wouldn't welcome the card.

I would be surprised and pleased.  But then, I feel like I "know" you from your posts on the board.

I would be too afraid of offending someone. Even a generic holiday card can be taken badly.  I would also be a little weirded out if someone kept my address from a random swap.

I like holiday cards as much as the next person. But I wouldn't like receiving one from someone who kept my address after sending a book. There's a post in the CMT forum about the holiday card swap that you might enjoy participating in.

Last year I participated in a Holiday Card Swap. They may do that again this year. It was nice getting cards from everyone. (but we signed up for it)
