I probably put this book on my TBR list because it's a cross-genre: a police procedural set in the future of an alternate timeline. Well, the future part is pretty near and the alternate timeline is close enough to ours to make almost no difference. What I really liked was the mystery aspect. Two women have been murdered and a local reporter is haranguing the police about a serial killer. When another women is found dead, the investigation kicks into high gear. Why those women were chosen and if they have anything in common is the focus. Lots of twists and turns, a few dead ends, all followed up by the detectives. Even though this is set in a future, there's no technology magic that solves it for them â everything mentioned can be extrapolated from what we have right now â it still comes down to persistently questioning people and following up leads.
The main character, Hannah McCabe, is smart and likable. There's just enough to flesh out her and her family without taking too much of the story. I notice there's a sequel, which I'm going to get, but this could easily be a stand-alone.

Enjoyable and fun mystery. Set in an alternate time but with familiar settings and history. Enjoyed the characters. Will read the next one.
