There was not a great deal the pathologist could make of Rosen's charred remains after the wheeler-dealer's car had burst into flames at a midnight black-market mobsters' rendezvous outside Moscow. It looked like a bomb, but no one had seen a thing - the witnesses has gone to ground. Arkady Renko, Special Investigator (re-instated) with the Moscow Prosecutor's office, found himself taken off the case before he had made any headway. Not a man to be lightly cast aside, however, he continued to pursue his slender leads, which took him to Munich and Berlin - and back into the life of his long-lost beloved, Irina of the alluring voice - while the hard-pressed mafiosi stayed only a step ahead and made diligent efforts to remove him from the scene altogether.
