This is the first Cassandra Clark that I've read. Now I can't wait to go back and read the first Sister Hildegard book, Hangman Blind. Sister Hildegard is the wife of a knight in middle ages (1300's) that has gone missing and presumed dead so she joins a nunnery. There is a great deal of unrest in England at this time with King Richard's time on the throne threatened as factions seek to overthrow him. This is true in the section of Yorkshire where Hildegard resides. When she is sent to Florence to get a relic from an obscure church she becomes drawn into the mystery of who murdered a nobleman and hid him in the bales of wool being sent to Florence for sale, the minstrel that is accused of the murder and goes with her to Florence to escape until his name is cleared, a threat to her own life when the knight sent to guard her is killed, and another threat to her life when she arrives in Florence. With all this going on it moves at a rapid pace on to a surprise ending. Never a boring moment! There are things like her relationship with the abbot that are left hanging and what becomes of Hildegard when she goes to another mother house. Got to read the next book, The Law of Angels.
