So, to maximize the usefulness of tags, if I come across a book that has been tagged in a useful way by someone else, should I 'reinforce' that tag by adding a duplicate of my own? I guess that would put the useful tag one step closer to being one of the top 15? Do I have a correct understanding of how these things work?

Yep that's how it works.  I try to also add a couple more useful tags if I can to push the more personal ones back further.

Okay. Thanks! It seems like we have a looonnnnggg time before this becomes really relevant if the top 15 tags are shown for each book!

That's why it helps if everyone does a few tags now and then.  We do have thousands of members!

Even if you just tag your favorite books -- I find I can go through my 'books I've read' list and do things like list the main character, the place it is set in, which book in the series it is (!!! Such a useful tag! I love seeing '1st in Series' or '5th in Series' when I'm browsing around), and so on.
