Topic: Can't remember the name of the book series or author

Please help me! I basically remember a plot about a misplaced man from earth ending up as a swordsman. There are differing levels of skill all the way to the 7th level. This is for the entire world. there are levels of priests, swordsmen, etc. There is also a river that plays a major role in the series. What is the name?!?!?!?! Could it be The Reluctant Swordsman by Dave Duncan? http://www.amazon.com/Reluctant-Swordsman-Seventh-Book/dp/0345352912 I haven't read it, but that's what I found when I searched around for your description.
