I recently read "The Gargoyle" by Andrew Davidson.  Didn't have the book in front of me, but when I typed in the name of the book into the search box, there was only one version of my book listed, with the same bookcover that my book has.  So, I hit "list" and book is on my bookshelf.  I later got my book, and noticed that the ISBN number is not the same as the one I had listed (my book is a 2009 release, not the 2008 release, though covers are the same).  Now I cannot go back to my bookshelf and remove this book, since there is now an exclamation point in the box which usually says "delete" (there are 6 people who have this on their wishlist).  There does not seem to be a way to remove this book from my bookshelf, unless I'm missing something?? I guess I could leave it there and inform the requestor that the ISBN number is different, but would have preferred to remove it from my bookshelf and then relist it with the correct ISBN.  Suggestions?

Sounds like what happened was that the book you listed was already a wish listed book.  When you post a book that is wish listed, it automatically sends a notice to the person wishing for the book & if they don't have it on auto-request, then they have 48 hours to decide if they want the book or not before it will move to the next person in line.

If there are 6 people wishing for your book, then it will go through those 6 people while you cannot do anything, UNLESS one of those people accepts the request.  If that happens, you will have to inform the person that the book you have isn't the same ISBN number.  If they decide they do not want the book (since it was technically your fault for posting the wrong ISBN), then you will have to cancel the request.

You will not be able to just delete the book since it's on hold for whoever has it on their wish list.

You cannot remove WL books from your bookshelf. The system is set up that you have to wait until they accept the order, then cancel. In addition, PBS keeps track of how many times we cancel WL books. It would be safer for you to remove it and post it under the correct ISBN, so there is no risk of the book being marked RWAP, wrong version. You might think of offering to post the book under the right ISBN to the person it is first offered to. You can do this if they have both ISBNs wished for.

There is some way to put your shelf on vacation hold before the order rolls over to prevent it being offered to the next member. But I am not familiar with that. I just know it can be done.

You may also want to place your bookshelf on vacation hold so that your book won't be offered to the next wisher in line if the first wisher doesn't respond.

From the help center:

I posted a Wish Listed book I can't send!

If you Post a Wish Listed book you cannot send, the book will be involved in a pending offer immediately, and you will not be able to delete it from the system or cancel the offer until the Wishing member requests the book.

You should:

  • Wait for the book to be requested.
  • Decline the request if you cannot send the book by clicking "I cannot mail"
    • Doing this will remove the book from your account.
    • You will have a chance to explain what happened to the requestor when you decline the request.
  • To "speed up" the process (to prevent having to wait for a request if the first wisher(s) decline the offer of the book) you can put your account on Vacation Hold.
    • then, if the first wisher declines or does not accept the offer of the book, the book will go back onto your Bookshelf and you can delete it from there.  After deleting it, you can remove the Vacation Hold from your account.

Thanks for all the help; I feel like an idiot having assumed that the only book with my cover listed when searched was the same one I had.  I knew all the versions were wishlisted, so wanted to post it quickly to give someone else a chance to read.  Anyway, all this info. has been very helpful.  I did put my bookshelf on the vacation hold, and will PM any requestor who comes through, wanting the book and let them know what happened.  Lesson learned to not post a book unless its right in front of me!

I think we've all made a mistake or two on here at some point.  I accidentally posted a book once that ended up having some writing in it that I didn't initially see until after someone had requested it.  It happens to us all.  Just take it as a lesson learned!

Another thing... since the book is wish listed under a different ISBN number, there is a link over in the Book Bazaar to post books that we have that are Wish Listed under other ISBN numbers.  You may want to list your book over there.

I believe you have to be the one to cancel the transaction after they accept.  If not and they cancel, then they will go to the end of the WL line, and that's not fair to them.

I did something similar recently and I know that I it was a common sense mistake.  A d'oh moment. I bought a book at a school fundraising booksale like 2 years ago.  I decided that I'm probably never going to read and so I posted it from my TBR pile. But I didn't notice the little note feature here that I used to mark that I had a different ISBN.  The system must not have recognized my ISBN when I wanted to put the book on my TBR.  I had it on my bookshelf and my bookshelf on vacation.  Came off hold and it popped as on WL hold.

I PM'd the member with the problem, told her to accept it and that I would cancel on my end.  She ended up using the not now button anyway, but she let me kow before she hit so I could be back on vacation.  I was able to delete the book and repost it under the correct ISBN.

So if it looks like it's going to time out-go on vacation and delete it before you come off.

Well, the first wishlister let the 48 hours go without requesting the book, so with my bookshelf on hold, it didn't run through the remaining 6 wishlisters.  So, I was able to remove it from my bookshelf and re-post it with the correct ISBN #.  Every other version of this book has wishlisters who want it, but for this one; I wonder if there will be an email to let the first person in line know that this book is now available, though with a different ISBN#?  Thanks everyone for all the sound advice; glad I was able to fix this without having to deny the request or PM the requestor about the issue.

When I have an odd ISBN, I go to the main one and add a tag.  Something like "Also under ISBN XXX"  This helps the book move in case they are not linked by the computer.

I'm confused that now if I type in "The Gargoyle" by Andrew Davidson, the one I listed doesn't even seem to show up. Mine is ISBN #978-0-307-38867-4.  The one with the same cover as mine (but different ISBN#) comes up (with 6 wishers), but I don't see mine there at all.  Can someone else check for me to see if it shows up for them when searched?  (Forgive me if I'm missing something again!)

I see your edition in the system with 2 copies available.

When you search, make sure to only type the letters numbers , don't have dashes or spaces in the ISBN. Also make sure that you are searching for All Books if you are in the Advanced Search and aren't in a narrower selection like Wish Listed or something.

edit: to correct my doh moment.

That's interesting, Patty, because when I type in "The Gargoyle" mine doesn't show up; just says 1 of 6 results, and my book isn't among them.  Perhaps some kind of computer glitch, because my search shows no available copies of this book, and each of the six results have wishlist requests.  So, maybe its just me?

When I do the search (for "posted books"), your copy shows up second whether I just search for "The Gargoyle" or whether I put "Andrew Davidson" for the author as well. This works when I do a keyword search and when I do a title/author search. So I don't think you need to worry about that; I don't know what's going on with your own search, but it isn't affecting others. smiley

Yeah, must have been a computer glitch on my end, because everyone else could apparently see it; someone has requested the book this morning.  Thanks again smiley
