Hi, all -

Knowing this is the place to come for quick, accurate help, I hope to hear from someone soon...   Had a request and accepted it, with a mailing date of Mon. (tomorrow).  It's a large print HB.  Very late last night, I took a second look and noticed a small tear in the dust jacket (still postable, right?)  Trouble is, someone repaired it with a small piece of tape, evidently in an attempt to keep it from tearing more.  I've PM'd the requester about this, to see if they still want it.   The book itself is in excellent, like new condition.   What would you do?   Should I leave the DJ off of it?  Send it anyway?  It is heavy and will cost a bit (more than $3) to send, so I sure don't want a RWAP over a small piece of tape!   Help!!!      D.

I know that large print books are hard to come by, so that is my inclination too.  But is tape a "no-no"?      D.

If the sender had a Requestor Condition requiring a dust jacket, then the tape is a problem.  If there was no RC, then the dust jacket isn't required so its condition doesn't matter.  I'd say include the torn dust jacket, in that case.

from Book Condition Criteria for 'Swappability' at PBS:

Dust Jacket:

  • The DUST JACKET (this is not the same as the cover of a book) does not have to be included with a book at all, unless the requestor had this in their Requestor Conditions.
  • So DUST JACKET condition cannot be considered as part of the condition of a book, unless there were Requestor Conditions on the request specifying that the dust jacket be included.
  • If the Dust Jacket was to be included as specified in the Requestor Conditions on the request, the Dust Jacket must meet the same conditions as defined for the cover, below.

Patty - Thank you!  That is exactly what I was hoping!  Guess I can go wrap that baby now and get it ready...no RC's to worry about there.    :)    D.

Yep, definitely send it.  DJs aren't required unless there's an RC about it.

But to answer your other question, TAPE IS OK on the cover of a book or on the dustjacket, as long as it is not fixing a rip which would be unpostable.

So, rip under 1 inch, but taped up is still postable.

ripped larger than 1 inch, is unpostable, taped or not.

I base this on the fact that stickers are OK on books, and tape is just a clear sticker, not to mention the fact that the libraries tape every paperback I've ever seen, and those are postable as well.

If there was no DJ RC then I would not have PM'd.  Hopefully if you mail the book the person will not PM after the fact to tell you not to send it out.

There is no need to PM if a book meets posting guidelines and there's no RC. EVen if there is an RC there should be no need to PM as the RCS should be clear and concise.
