I figure that they ask how much postage is on a received book in order to be able to have an accurate amount for the postage they tell you it needs, right?  If that is so, should I not report postage when I receive more than one book in a package, because it would probably skew their numbers.  Is that right?

Postage is calculated based on the book's size, # of pages, and binding type in it's details. I don't know what their use of the postage in the survey is, but it isn't used to calculate the book's postage. Too many people mail multiple books for them to rely on that number.

I always answer that question because it takes just a second, but I have often wondered what they do with that information.

I complete the form as well as possible, but I don't add up stamps and I don't get a magnifying glass out to try to figure out smudged post marks -- though I might give it a try if that info was really important.  Since it's optional, I don't think it is.
