I posted 2 hardcover children's books into the system. they were both on the same member's wishlist. They were on automatic request. the member has this written on her requests.

I do not want to receive books that have been in a smoking environment, please!  We are allergic to cigarette smoke.  Thank you!

These are ex-library books. I don't smell any smoke on them. so would it be okay to send? this is the only member wishing for them. I sent a pm to explain they are ex-library books. should i still send them or decline?

my 2 cents. Specifically regarding smoke RCs Unless it says words to the effect of

"Not willing to accept books that are currently in a smoking home" I decline.

All other Smell RCs I don't even consider accepting. Smells are way too subjective.

Decline.  Frankly, non-smoker's that have a mild problem usually use the wording "currently in a smoker's house".  Folks who use the more strict language usually need it.

This is a tricky one, because her RC can be interpreted rather broadly. Some folks' RCs say "not currently in a smoking environment" which is easy to say yes or no to. Certainly, if you wanted to be 100% safe I would decline, because you don't know where the books have been before you bought them. If you do, you might want to suggest that she clarify her RC somewhat.

(Side note: I'm not sure that any of my books could be said to have never been in a smoking environment, even though I don't smoke and neither do any of my friends, especially in my house. A lot of my books are secondhand and who knows what history they've had before me, not to mention the occasional time when I am carrying a book around with me and end up around smokers for a while.)

If I get books from friends or yard sales and can't testify to the history of the book, then I decline.

I'm with the others above. I decline if it just says 'smoke', 'smoking', etc.  I then go on to explain that:

"I'd love to send the book, but  I got the book used and don't know the history, so can't guarantee it's never been in a smoking environment.  We don't smoke, so if the word 'currently' were added to the RC, I would be happy to send the book.  Pat

In addition to the above, since there is only one wisher, you could include in your RC an explanation something along the lines--"The book is ex-library; I don't smell any smoke on it, but to be on the safe side, I'm declining.  Since the copy I've posted is the only one currently in the system, if you would like me to send it anyway, just turn off your RC for this book and re-request it.  I'd be happy to send it to you."
