I am not sure if I've seen this before, so excuse me if I'm being repetative...I got a request with a condition stating that they wanted books that are not from a smoking environment.  This particular book is one I got from someone else on PBS several weeks ago.  I don't smoke, and no one in my home smokes, and the book doesn't smell smokey, but how could I possibly know whether this thing has been in a smoking environment before?  So I said I couldn't send it and explained why.

Was that the right thing?  Should I have said yes then sent a PM explaining that?  I just wasn't sure if I was interpreting their condition to stringently, but otoh, I don't want someone to have some kind of smoking allergy fit based on something this book had encountered before it ever came into my possession.

Personally, I think that when you're in doubt, you should decline the request. My home is non-smoking and I'm sensitive to smoke smell, so I might have given the book a "whiff" test and accepted based on that. But ultimately it's your call. Don't feel bad. If you weren't sure, it's best to decline.

Since you don't smoke, and as such I would think it would be obvious to you if a book smelled like smoke,  I think you could have accepted the request.  However, I think you were okay for not accepting for the reason stated, too.  I put a "disclaimer" on my profile stating that no one in my home smoked but I did get books from UBS and PBS that I am sure have come from smokers, so all I could guarantee was that any book ordered from me was not currently from a smoker.   Some people actually add that in their RCs, which I think is a god idea, since many of us do get books from outside sources.

If it were me, I would have sent it.  I always have before and never had a problem.  But you'll find that there are varying opinions on this issue here, many would do what you did.

I have a smoking condition and this is how I word mine.  "Please no books that are currently in a smoking environment.  If you are a non-smoker and can not smell smoke, they will be fine, even if book is used.  I buy many second-hand books from sales and used books stores and haven't had any problems."

So, based on what I read, I would have sent it.  You can always choose Yes you can mail.  Then PM the requestor if you have any doubts, just to make sure.  I know I have never been angry when someone has contacted me just to be sure that the book would be ok.  I think it is very thoughtful and I appreciate it.

Thanks, guys!!  I like the language you used, Angie.  That's very clear.

I had a request like Joy's a few weeks ago.  I PMed the requestor and told her the book wasn't currently in a smoking home and didn't smell like smoke, but I was uncomfortable sending it based on her RC and suggested rewording her RC to only cover the *current* owner since we don't know a book's history.  She said I was the first person to question her RC and told me to send the book.

I do wish people would realize we aren't psychic when they prepare their RCs!

Just want to add that as someone who has a non-smoking RC due to health reasons, I always appreciate these threads because they often give good ideas.  It probably never occured to the requester to state "current non-smoking."  It didn't occur to me until reading one of these threads months ago.  I've tweaked my RC several times because of threads like this.

So for those of you who have to turn down our requests because we weren't clear enough, keep giving us the feedback!!

Yes, these kinds of threads have caused me to tweek my RC's a bit as we go along...the following is my current one in regards to smoking...

Please due to allergies to smoke (not pets) I cannot receive books that are currently in a smoking home (you don't have to know the history...if no one smokes in your house then yes, I want the book).  Even if you just bought the book at a Garage Sale, Thrift Store, FleaMarket...if there isn't someone in your house that smokes, YES I want the book.

The following Do Not count as a  "smoking home":   (1) 'wood-burning' stove;  (2) smoking postal carrier.
