Hi all-

What are PBS rules - if any - regarding this?  (I can't find anything in the help docs.)  A member requested a book, and had a simple RC - hardcovers should have their dustjackets.  The book in question doesn't have a DJ, so I should decline, right?  But the requestor PM'd me wanting to know if it had a DJ, because they might take it anyway.  Thoughts, anyone?

Larry

It is up to you what you want to do. Is it a Wish List book or one available in the system? If it is just a book available in the system I would tell the requester that they need to cancel the request and resubmit it without the RC. If it is a Wish List book, I would probably just decline it since I would not be willing to accept an RC I couldn't meet based on a PM. I would just reply to the PM that they need to turn off RCs on requests where they are willing to take the book that doesn't meet them. I try to meet all RCs, but I am usually not willing to futz with a member who won't use them correctly and tries to negotiate in PMs.

I've accidentally had mine on with books that I didn't care on, so I do understand an oops now and then, but  when I've PMed the sender I told them that I didn't care at all and would not mark it RWAP, letting them know I understood if they weren't confortable with that. I would never expect someone to PM me with specifics so that I could then decide what I wanted to do. Either the RC applies or it doesn't.

I won't send it without them turning off their RC.  Been dinged by one person who PMed to say it was okay, then RWAP the book.

I had all the backing PMs to cover me.  But they really messed it up for everyone following.

If they haven't included a way to contact them in their RC, and you must accept in order to PM them, I would probably decline the request, stating to them in the Reason section that they had not given contact information included in RC, and that book does not have DJ.  If they still want it, they should turn off their RC and re-request.

If they did give contact info in RC, what's the harm in just sending a message as they request before accepting/declining the request?  If you don't hear back from them by deadline, you can just decline due to RCs and not lose your sendout FIFO place.

I just had a couple of RC's that said to PM them about the book. Both of the requestor's didn't bother to put their ID's in the RC.

I am seeing a lot of these requests also. I usually decline, and always explain that it is not possible to PM without first accepting the book request, which is way more trouble than it's worth.

I am sorry, but if you have RC's I am not going to PM you.   I will follow your RC's the letter, send the book if they meet and decline if they don't.  I am the one who determines if the book meets your RC or not, NOT you.

I have NOTHING against RC's.  The simply should be clear and precise and not need a PM.  If you RC's don't apply to a book,YOU do the work and turn off the RC before ordering.

A couple times I ordered a book and forgot to turn off my RC. In those cases I PM'd the sender and asked them to disregard my RC and use the PM as proof.
