Recently I have received several hard covered books with heavily dog eared pages. I don't mind a few (ok I do, but will tolerate one or two), but every 5th page is excessive. If I put this in my condition requests I don't want to appear to be too nit picky. Thoughts? |

I'm going direct you to this thread where (ignoring the super long RC) one of the requests is no more than five dog eared pages. Note the comments left by other members: http://www.paperbackswap.com/forum/topic.php?t=214035 In my own opinion, I would have to refuse your RC because, though I'm usually pretty good about using a bookmark rather than dog earing pages, I wouldn't want to take the chance. Using a number might be a bit excessive; I would probably just say 'Please no dog eared books' rather than saying 'No more than five' because members know right off the bat if they have not dog eared a book but few would want to go through and count for you. |

I would turn down a "no dog eared books" request. I generally don't dog ear, but I also don't tend to notice if someone else had. I'm not confident that I'd find any dog ears on a quick flip through. If I can't be sure I meet a condition with a quick check, I turn it down. IMO the no more than 5 dog ear request would be one that I would consider. If I found none on a quick check, I'd bet there were less than 5.
That's the thing with requestor conditions, everyone has an opinion. |

That was a funny thread, but IIRC the dog ears were only a portion of the RC (taken in it's extensive entirety, we wondered if the requester wouln't be better off buying new). Ginny, sounds like your book has received some harsh treatment. I've received bunches of books and don't recall one with that problem. So you are certainly welcome to post an RC for an acceptable number of dog ears (lol) but OTOH, how likely are you to have this problem again? |

If dog-eared pages bother you ,then you really need to put that in an RC. If they distract you from enjoying the book especially. Your RC's should meet your needs. |

I'd also be nervous about a "no dog-eared books" RC. It's not that I do it myself (I always use a bookmark) but that when reading a book, I'll notice creases where someone else has folded over the pages. I wouldn't want to bother with squinting at every page in a book to check for evidence of past dogears. Maybe something along the lines of "please make sure pages are clean and uncreased" would be more general but still make your point. |

Since joining PBS, I no longer dog-ear the pages of my books, but I rarely notice if the books that I've received in trade from here were previously dog-earred. So...if I were to receive a book request with your potential dog-ear RC, I'd probably have to turn it down to avoid a RWAP because I couldn't confidently say whether there were any or 1 or two or many dog-ears.
Weigh the books you might lose because of No-RC-under-any-circumstances swappers and swappers like me who just don't know if there are dog-ears or not, against the level of your irritation with dog-earred pages and you'll be able to decide the right choice for yourself -- To RC or Not to RC. |

I would turn down a dog-ear RC in a minute as being too picky. Last Edited on: 9/6/10 9:05 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

I would also turn down and RC for dog-eared pages no matter whether you listed a number or not. I don't dog-ear but, someone that had the book before me might have but, I don't really notice and I definitely am not going to go through the book and check...that is more trouble than 1 credit is worth. |
