ORIGINAL POST DELETED BY me (Roger).

As this question/issue was resolved, I've erased my original post, so as not to embarrass or call out anybody.

If an ADMIN would care to delete this thread, I think that might be a good idea.

Thanks everybody for your reading and replies and advice.

roger

Typical ignorance. You did nothing wrong, and people that use the "it was that way when I got it" and "go buy a new one" lines are using a non-excuse. She didn't follow the posting guidelines, period. You never asked for a new book, just one that was in acceptable condition.

I personally wouldn't bother responding to her stupidity (as I often get snarky and make people cry), but if you feel you must you could just shoot her a copy of the posting guidelines that pertain to the problem.

Since she returned your credit, there's no need to report her. Though you still could... smiley

Roger, you were correct to mark the swap RWAP and ask for your credit back. PBS has set a minimum condition guidelines and books posted are expected to at least meet those conditions. Some seem to think the rules don't apply to them. When you get books that don't meet the site standards mark them RWAP (whether you ask for a credit is up to you). Most swaps are hassle free but every once in a while these bad ones turn up. Hopefully your replacement book will meet the site guidelines.

I would have responded to her one last time with a paste of the rules regarding writing in books, and then dropped it.

Well I never responded to her last message (not yet anyway).  Some people are just impossible in their way, and I think that's her deal.

You did nothing wrong and were very polite. I would probably not PM the person again. In my limited experience (and from what I read on here), you are never going to convince the person that they were in the wrong, even if you post the guidelines for her. Some people just get their panties in a bunch over stuff like this and will not respond well even to nicely worded PMs such as your.

Sounds to me like this person is well aware of the club rules and was just ticked at being called on sending an unpostable.  Don't take it personally, or sink to her level.  Don't waste your time trying to educate this person- they know exactly what they did wrong.  Drop it and move on- it's not worth it to waste any more energy over someone like this.  If you get any more rude PMs from her, forward them to PBS via the Contact Us link.

I'm with the others. Just ignore this last PM from her.

She probably didn't know the rules when she got the book so figured she had to accept it as is. Then she decided to try and pass it off on someone else and hope they wouldn't know the rules either. At least she returned the credit. I figure the worst transaction is the bad response + no credit return.

Sigh...I wonder at some people.

Roger, you were very polite in your exchange and you did the right thing. I'm not sure it will help to respond to her childish PM...she doesn't seem to be the type that is happy when somebody points out her mistakes. Also, she seems to have known that the book was unpostable and was trying to glide by with the 'I got it that way.' At least she returned your credit.

I would probably send another pm-

Dear Sally-

There was no need to be rude.  I wasn't asking for a NEW book, just a book that meets posting criteria.  If you do not wish to follow the rules, YOU have no business trading here.

She was probably reacting to your use of the word hate. It's a strong word and it's not important that you hate writing in books. The fact is that writing violates club rules so you didn't need to state twice that you hate writing. It suggsts emotion like a little whiny tantrum and it's not necessary.

Next time just state the facts. Your message would have been fine w/out the "I hate blah, blah, blah."

I think your message and your request were fine and polite.

She returned the credit, so I would ignore her last remark.  If you feel like you have to respond to her, I would do like the others suggested and copy and paste the rules regarding books with writing in them.

Good luck!

She's mad because you called her out on a bad book.  If she had taken the time to read the rules she could have avoided this and probably still gotten a credit for it from someone if it was WL.

The worst books and rudest responses I have gotten have been from long time members with the excuse of "I got it that way and I didn't complain and you should by it new".  I just thanked them for the credit refund (the ones that gave it) and let the rudeness pass.

Returning Rudeness with more Rudeness is not appropriate.

I don't find that reply to be rude, though you could loose the emphasized words.

I find it best not to provoke people though, and seeing as this is how they reacted to you being nice, it's probably best not to say anything else.

I think you were fine (although I agree that you did not need to mention how much you hate underlining).  She broke the rules and should refund the credit.

I would let the matter drop.  For every bad swapper, there are 30 good ones--at least!

Yeah, I won't respond, I was just wondering what others thought.  Thanks for all the replies.  smiley

You did the right thing, except, you should not use a name of another member in this capacity in the forums (even if it were an alias)...substituting the word (Member) is sufficient.

I think using the word "hate" definitely set the other member off. Her response was definitely not acceptable, and I would just ignore it. She probably thougt that if she got it that way, it was ok to pass it on. So a gentle reminder would have been fine. Now, I'd certainly just move on since you got your credit back.

I'm glad I saw this thread, it helped me figure out what I think I'll do about the situation I have with a book I recently received.  Although the original post has been deleted, it sounds like a situation I had just now with the "I received it that way" on a book I marked RWAP.  I got the credit back, but was told that I should have RCs (my problem with the book was the staining that makes it unpostable, perhaps liquid damage of some sort).  I don't think I'm overly picky, just want books that meet club standards.  I wasn't sure if I should respond to the PM or just mark it as resolved and let it go.  After reading this, I think I'll just mark it as resolved and let it go.
