Gardner's novel of a philosophy professor dying of cancer and moving his family back to his childhood home in Batvia, New York. In Gardner's own words, this is a story of death - both spiritual and the death of civilization. He claims to have used Tolstoy's title for his book for a reason.

A dying professor moves back to his childhood home (which is near mine, by the way!)to make peace with his past before his time runs out.
