This is the first book to comprehensively describe the functions and creative processes of successful retail design. Aimed at the design professional and student of design, the book is also an illuminating aid to any design client about to collaborate with a designer on a retail project. The first part of the book covers all aspects of the design process, from planning to merchandising, from entrances to “behind-the-scenes” services. The second part looks in detail at the various retail sectors, including fashion, household, and department stores, to shopping malls, specialty stores, and service facilities. The book concludes with speculation on the future directions of retail design.

In his foreword, Rodney Fitch, chairman and founder of Fitch RS, one of the world’s best known design companies, offers a personal view of the development of retail design. Throughout, the book draws on his extensive experience in this field to produce a comprehensive guide to the process and practice of good retail design. The book examines a wide and international range of retail design problems and solutions, illustrating with stunning color photography examples and case studies from the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Rodney Fitch is chairman and founder of Fitch RS, one of the world’s largest and best known design companies. Based in London, his design consultancy has offices in the United States, Europe, and the Far East and works on a wide range of projects, including architecture, interior design, graphics communications, and product design. Fitch RS is best known for its pioneering work in retail design over the past decade, including projects for GB Inno, La Rinascenta, de Bijenkorf, the Burton Group, Boots, the Sarah Lee Corporation, and Rand McNally.

Lance Knobel is a former editor of Designers’ Journal and is an experienced writer on many aspects of design. His books include International Contract Design, the Faber Guide to Twentieth-Century Architecture, and Office Furniture.
