After the fiery ordeal of the temptation in the wilderness, we find Christ ... more »" as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoicing as a strong man to run a race." And so, too, as we read the lives of all his most eminent servants, we find preparation for his service to have been by some trial, before they have been intrusted with any great commission important to his Church and for the welfare of his people. Thus we read, " God did tempt Abraham," that is, try him; and thus the prayer is emphatic, " Lead us not into temptation," that is, do not suffer us to be tried above what we are able to bear; " but deliver us from evil." Then I would say, not only to individuals, but to the Church herself at this critical juncture of time, " Blessed is the man who endureth temptation : for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him." There are stages in the divine life, and there is a crown of life in this life beyond the trial of temptation and obedience. And this is the attainment set forth by Christ in his sublime, stupendous Sermon on the Mount. That sermon was preached before multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond Jordan. It is the next thing which presents itself to us in his ministry; and it is not only a marvel of wisdom, as it was confessed to be by those who heard it, but it takes in the whole system of ethics,—it is, as it were, a flood of glory let in upon our world,—the very holiness of his gospel; that which had been foreshadowed by the law, by the Mosaic law, by the ceremonial law, and by the prophets; here a transition period, even for the law, is clearly mark...« less
