(c1974) A handsome, liberal bachelor with a pro-football past, the Reverend Randollph expected problems when he became interim pastor at the Church of the Good Shepherd. But a murder in the church choir room, leaving a nude victim, demanded more than clerical judgment. Nor could Raldollph find support in the dead woman's identity, Marianne Reedman was the wife of a member of the Board of Trustrees who had just vanished with ten million dollars of the church's money. A good old fashioned British mystery without being 'stoddy'.

A detective who believes only in "facts", plus an attractive newswomqan always ready to aid a bachelor in distress, helps Randollph search for clues--including a set of secret diaries that reveal Marianne's nineteen affairs. Was her final unnamed lover the murderer as Lieutenant Casey believes? Randollph doesn't thinnk so--and applying the tenets of a stern Calvinist doctrine, discovers a killer too close to the vestry for comfort.

An old detective novel, but with great writing. Charles Merrill Smith had written six other detective novels before "The wages of sin" and all received top reviews. This one is probably a collector's item, in great shape...and I hated to let it go because it is one I've read more than once!
