A gold mine for students of history, sociology and religion. Important insights into evangelical Protestantism during the period before the Civil War. Findings show that the vital center of American Protestantism in the 19th century was in the cities, rather than in the rural West. Religious ideals were strong forces motivating the social reform movements of the day; urban revivalism combined with the Quest of Christian perfection and the hope of millennial righteousness to inspire attacks on slavery, poverty and greed.
