Excellent book. If you liked the movie, you'll love this read. This is a "guys" type of book, but I loved it too.

If, like me, you well recall the drama of the early space missions, this book will bring back the unambiguous enthusiasm we felt for our astronaut heroes and their families. And if, instead, you're from a younger generation, you owe it to yourself to experience that excitement. Here's a fantastic rendering of the people and events, each one unique but each characteristic of America. A great read.

My favorite Tom Wolfe book - the space race, the formation of NASA, and Chuck Yeager. Wonderful book!

This is a great read, giving a rolicking account of the very early days of the American space program and the men (mostly) who were involved. Very easy to read, and very informative.

The men had it!!America's heroes...the first flyguys in space..battling Russians for control of the heavens! Putting their lives on the line day after day.! The women had it!! While Mr. Wonderful was aloft, it truly lacerated one's heart that the Hero's wife, down on the ground, had to perform with the whole world watching...The TV Press Conference.."What is in your heart? Do you feel with him while he's in orbit?"...Tom Wolfe's the right stuff!! Its a quality beyond macho. Beyond bracery. Cool courage! Its men like Chuck Yeager, fastest man on the earth; Pete Conrad who laughed himself out of the running; Gus Grissom who almost lost it when his capsule sank..and John Glenn, the only space traveler whose apple pie image wasn't a lie....

I grew up with this stuff but Wolfe gives an insight no one ever saw until now. I really enjoyed it.
