I saw in the book bazaar a 9/2 deal. Sounds good right? I thought so. You ordered any 2 off the shelf, pm the other 7 from the bookshelf. The books arrived...and i could salvage 3. The 2 I ordered were in bad shape. The 6 books I threw out were way beyond unpostable. Water damaged severely,(the pages stuck together and they smell mildewey so I think it's bad water damage) dirty, cobwebs on sides, spines broken, 1 was taped with pages falling out and one looks like something cocooned in it! Now 3 were ok and I did keep them so since I ordered 2 and even though the 2 I ordered had to be thrown out, I did get 3 so I marked as received. Now I wonder if that was right because this member listed these books and they shouldn't have been swapped.I did send him a note explaining all I said here and I hope he takes this and checks the books! Even the box had cobwebs in it! Should I have rwaped it? My dilemma is the 3 I did keep. I haven't had an issue before so I'm surprised someone would send such damaged books.

I don't really have an answer for you. Probably would have done the same thing you did. But, wow, that just flabbergast me! I hope whoever he is, he is a newbie and just doesn't understand the rules of the site yet. Because I can't imagine a seasoned member sending out something like that. I know that TPTB don't get involved in BB swaps, but I would maybe send them this info since he previously had all these books listed on his shelf. I know I would have hated to have received one of those via FIFO and would've definitely RWAP'd it.

Pam.

I might have done the same as you. You did receive 3 acceptable books.

BUT you got snookered on the deal. I'd probably have weighed how much I wanted those 3 books and how happy I was to have spent 2 credits on them.

If this was my trade and I only requested the books because of the deal; I'd have probably marked them RWAP because the two you had to request were without a doubt unpostable

Officially, from a PBS standpoint, the ones that matter are the 2 titles that you ordered and gave a credit for.  If they were unpostable, you've have been better to mark them as such; asking for your credit back or not would be your decision, but at least there would be a record if the member has a habit of sending out unpostable books.  Sounds like a very frustrating situation.

I thought if I rwaped I wasn't able to keep the 3 books and that meant I automatically wanted the credits back!! I should have asked here first!

Yes, we have a choice as to whether or not to request the credit refund.  Also, you aren't expected to return damaged books to the sender --> if the sender wants them back, s/he should cover postage.  I'm so sorry about the books you received!!!

I would have RWAP but probably not ask for the credits back because of the 3 that were OK. That way there is a record of the person sending out unacceptable books. Plus, I'd probably bathe in hand sanitizer afterwards. Yuck.

Wow, what a "deal", and sorry to hear that it happened!

I would have marked the requested books RWAP for the record since they were not postable. My initial thinking was not to ask for a refund if the three acceptable books were deemed to be worth the credits spent. However, since all the books were on the member's shelf and six were not postable, I think it may have been better to have RWAPed the trade, sent the member a polite PM about the terrible book condition, and respectfully asked for a refund. The member should not have posted and sent books in such poor condition regardless of the 9/2 "deal".  The poor quality books could have been listed in the bazaar as freebies, but even this is very questionable considering their condition.

If the member denied or ignored the refund request I would then just let it drop, but at least the RWAP and transaction would be on the member's record and come into play in the case of future bad transactions by the member.

ETA:
The member knew the books that he posted and sent were in poor condition or he wouldn't have offered a 9/2 deal and this, in my opinion, is not acceptable. Even if three of the books received were in acceptable condition, these were not the ones that were originally of interest and that prompted the trade. The member needs to know that sending unpostable books is not OK, even if part of a package deal.

I'm a bit disappointed that he didn't respond either. I explained what was wrong, why I didn't mark rwap, and suggested he review the books he has on his bookshelf before sending out more. I was nice but am disappointed/surprised that he never said sorry or anything. I am sort of a stickler for rules but that being said, I get a book condition can be subjective. In this case, it was just bad! Of course, most swaps are great so it makes this pretty surprising.

I've found that 99% of the time if someone knows they're doing something wrong, they won't respond. If they truly didn't know, they'll thank you for pointing it out.

did you take photos of the books?  I still think you could send photos to PBS HQ and let them know that even though you don't expect refund of your credits since you didn't RWAP the books, that the member should still be called on the carpet for condition of books he is sending.

No, I threw them out. I didn't even think to do that. I was so surprised and I looked through them, kept 3, and threw the box out...then I washed my hands a lot.i just dont know what this member was thinking and I didn't even receive an apology! I was nice about it too.

I wonder if the other two people who ordered from his deal in the Book Bazaar had the same problems?
