This is a compilation of four other books (Amazing Escapes, Creepy Stuff, Odd-inary People, Weirdest Critters) published at the start of the 21st C. but including material collected by Mr. Ripley himself. It is targeted at upper elementary and junior high kids, but I put my copy on the shelf at the old soldier's home and several people enjoyed some time with it as far as I can tell.
Regarding people with extraordinary capabilities, it is emphasized that Mr. Ripley did not see them as 'freaks' nor should we. Each book is interspersed with quiz items as well as a 'final exam' for those so inclined. I myself guessed very of the 'Amazing Escapes' items, did with choosing answers when I could put the question in historical context, and found 'Weirdest Critters' most interesting.
"Bats use their special sonar, called echolocation, to track down moths and other insects. But Tiger Moths can escape capture by sending out signals to warn the bat that it is about to land a terrible-tasting meal. Several other types of moths are also able to detect the bat's sonar and avoid being eaten."
Ripley's is best read in the daily newspaper, but as they keep shrinking this book is nice to read in several sittings. No index, many illustrations.
