When hotshot advertising executive Carla Brinson is sent to South Louisiana to oversee the public opening of the famous River's Call Plantation, she finally meets her match. Country doctor Damien Gilliard refuses to cooperate with the plan to open his family home to guided tours. He likes his privacy, and he'll do anything to protect his six year old ward, Theresa.
Carla is immediately drawn to both Damien and the little orphaned girl he's vowed to raise. But in spite of Carla's growing feeling for him, Damien remains aloof and unreachable. Carla soon finds out that he has secrets--his past has left him scarred and distrustful.
With patience and determination, Carla sets out to win Damien over to her side. He agrees to help her open his home, and they both admit they care for each other. But Carla still doesn't feel as if Damien really trusts her. When he at last confides in her and tells her the truth, she realizes that having a romantic relationship with Damien just might prove to be the biggest challenge of her life.
