This is an amusing and clever police procedural with an interesting supernatural bent. Peter Grant is a nerdy young man who just wants to be a detective, but is suddenly apprenticed to the last Registered Wizard in London, in a police department that the brass would really rather not know about. There are trolls, and vampires, and ghosts; now he needs to learn Latin to cast spells, and using magic blows up every electronic device nearby. This is a disaster for a guy who loves his TV and cell phone! And then he has to intervene in a spat between the god and goddess of the River Thames, and all the nubile water sprites of London's rivers and streams. Told in first person POV, Peter's droll comments on London life and learning magic are very funny, while his sense of duty and caring for people come through clearly.
