In #3 Ozma of Oz and #4 Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, Baum creates several wonderful characters, but by this one #5 their story is pretty much been told. Baum faced the question, now what?, and this one rather avoids a clear cut answer. He simply introduces Dorothy to the Shaggy Man, Polychrome the daughter of the Rainbow (about whom Child Protective Services ought to open a file), and a tedious little nitwit named Button-Bright. They go to the Emerald City for that pill Ozma's birthday party. Not to be a complete party pooper, I recommend this book since although they don't have much to do, the characters are likable and just being with them for a couple of hours gives us adults the oomph to face another week of work. Kids will like it because reading kids are often good sports.
