This past weekend the Food Network aired a Cake Making challenge. Did anyone else catch it? Each of the cakes was supposed to be the 3D version of the cover of a romance novel, and each of the cake makers had to make up the basic storyline/plot behind their cake (and the story was a significant part of the judging). Dorien Kelly, current president of the Romance Writers of America, was one of the judges. It was soooo funny, because it was obvious that none of the cake makers (3 women, 1 man) were romance novel readers. And the first cakemaker to present her story really screwed it up. She stated right off that she didn't believe that romance novels had to have a happy ending, so her story had a tragic ending (the hero accidently stabs the heroine through the heart). Of course, Dorien Kelly called her on that during the judging and even though the cake maker had a nice cake she ended up coming in last. The other three cake makers had decent storylines and several of the cakes were very pretty. Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if Food Network will be re-running this challenge anytime soon. But you know they will SOMETIME. |

Oh, sounds fun but would have been so much better if they'd used experts. I'll have to see if I can find it on youtube. |

I'll have to watch that! It sounds funny, especially the part about the woman thinking romance novels don't have to have a happy ending > _ > |

I happened to catch it. You're right, it was so obvious none of them had ever read a romance novel. Well, maybe the one that didn't finish her cake. She had a pretty compelling storyline but just had awful time management skills. The one was whining that she didn't realize there was a HEA in a romance novel. She thought Romeo and Juliet was a romance. |
