Hello to all who are interested in the Roots Read-Along starting on August 19th! My thanks to Yvonne, my good friend who suggested this breakdown for reading.

Here is the proposed breakdown for reading:

Part 1: Chapters 1 through 33 -Kunta Kinte from baby until capture (approx 150 pages)

Part 2: Chapters 34 through 68 - Kunta Kinte from captivity to birth of Kizzy (approx 200 pages)

Part 3: Chapters 68 through 83 - Family until Kizzy is sold (approx 200 pages)

Part 4: Chapters 84 through 94 - Kizzy has George through George marries (approx 100 pages)

Part 5: Chapters 95 to end (approx 200 pages)

Would everyone be able to keep up with a one-part-per-week schedule? Or should we extend to two weeks for each part? Or would you prefer a mix of lengths?

Those parameters work for me! I should be able to handle about 200 pgs. per week easily. I may even read ahead if I get to a good part!

: )

Edited because I can't type worth a darn...

That works for me. I can do it in a week, but I'm fine with two if that's what people prefer.

I would love the one a week schedule.  That would give us lots of time to discuss here before moving on.   THAT is what interest me the most.  To be able to discuss what we are reading.

I think one part a week should be just fine.  If we are beginning on August 19, do you want us to have the first part finished by then or do we start reading then?

Annika, we'll start reading on the 19th, but on that day I'll also start the thread for discussion. Once a person has finished the section, she can go to the thread for that section to start posting about it. That way, there will be no spoilers for people who haven't finished yet. The next week, I'll start thread #2, and so on. Each thread can continue for as long as there is discussion about the section.

Make sense?

Hey I have this book and Ive been meaning to read it. I love Alex Haleys Queen so when I saw Roots at a FOL sale I got it. I might just join in. Starts the 19th huh? I'll try to remember that.

The schedule sounds fine to me.  I will try to keep up as best I can with one week segments.  I have a newborn, so we'll see.

(Sorry it took me so long to respond to this.  I was in the hospital having my baby and have been recovering from an emergency C-section.)

Bethany, glad you're back home and that everything is now OK! I kept awake during those overnight feedings with my little one last year by reading. Set up the kid, read until he was done. Got a lot of reading done that way, and I stayed awake, too! :)

Yes, I'm just beginning to discover that breastfeeding and reading go hand in hand at 3 a.m. :)

This should be okay for me since I have already read it. I am still waiting for my copy so it depends on when/if I get this back if I am able to participate. Thanks for asking me to join

I got the book! I will try to keep up. I have so much going on to read right now, but since I have read it in the past, I think I should be able to join in on the discussions. I received a copy of the 30th anniversary addition from a co-worker.

NJT, I considered getting a copy of the 30th anniversary edition, but then when I saw it at the store, I really didn't see much additional info in it. I thought that was kind of strange, because I thought by the description that it would have more.
