If you are trying to explain the holocaust to a youth, this book is a must-read. I read this when I was very young and the book never left my mind. Now at 35, I've re-read it and further understand many things I didn't understand the first time around.

This book tells the story of Rosemarie, an Austrian native living a happy, full life in Holland during the 40s. Religion was never an issue until the war started, and suddenly Rosemarie finds herself being thrown out of school, losing her home, and being shipped off to three different concentration camps. Friendships made and ending in death, Rosemarie grows from a child to a young adult in this hard-to-put-down book. Even if you aren't into history, this is an excellent read.
