Although the author was correct in taking her time to let the romances evolve naturally, it seemed that the book was too long (almost 500 pages).  The characters were all likable and interesting to follow.  I thought the secondary romance was charming.

The premise of the novel was very interesting.  Millicent Hayes has a complete life, she thinks, caring for her crippled brother, her home, gardens, and church/community activities.  However, when Jonathan Lawrence and his daughter move into the empty house next door, things begin to change.  He makes Millicent view her life differently; Jonathan makes her see that her family and her guilt are keeping her from reaching out for a fuller life.  Â
