Gabby recently got out of an abusive relationship. She ends up in small town Haven to start over. Ethan is trying to start an outdoor adventure business with his 2 childhood friends Mark and Ryan (whose stories will be books 2 and 3 in this series).
Gabby and Ethan's first meeting was memorable (and interesting) in a not-so-good way; Gabby was stung by a next of yellowjackets and fells into a stream. Both characters have some serious baggage. Ethan's mother was abused (and murdered) by his father and he spent time in foster care (that's how he met Mark and Ryan) before being adopted by his maternal grandmother, Dixie. Dixie was a memorable character and a matchmaker. She was also diagnosed with an inoperable (brain) aneurysm and Ethan has to make peace with her terminal condition.
This had such a good start and then started to really drag for me. It was easy to put down and pick back up. It does deal with serious subject matter and how domestic violence infects the whole family. There was just something missing for me (and I find I am unable to put my finger on what it was, other than I just didn't connect with the characters). On the fence about reading the others, but most likely won't.
