After boarding school at St.Elphin's in Darley Dale, Derbyshire she taught for five years in deprived Nottinghamshire primary schools. She married Kenneth Adam with whom she had four children: three sons and a daughter, the journalist Corinna Adam. The couple originally lived in Manchester before moving to London.

In the decade between 1937 and 1947 she worked for the Ministry of Information and wrote several books and a number of radio scripts including some for Woman's Hour which started on the BBC in 1946. Between 1944 and 1976 she wrote for the Church of England Newspaper, contributed over 2000 pages from the perspective of a Christian socialist feminist. Between 1937-61 she wrote 12 novels and co-authored a biography on Beatrice Webb with Kitty Muggeridge.
