Catherine Cookson is one of my favorite authors and this is on my favorite read list. Lizzie grows up in poverty and is saved from being raped by Geoff a local man. He brings her home to help his mother and she blends into the family as if born there. Geoff goes through several phases during the book...pre-war he is in love with a rich girl that is very snobbish, war time their relationship has blossomed into an affair then he is wounded and comes home to live. His lover has married so he turns his sights on lovely Lizzie who is honesty and trustworthy and in love with the Geoff's lover's brother. Twists and turns and side stories abound but it all starts to come together one afternoon when she find Geoff's lovers husband trying take his life. No spoilers but this was a great read!
Hmmm...I think I'll go pull it off the shelf now!
