I'm pretty sure this book is a rwap, but wanted to be sure. On the edges of several pages, there are small tears and pieces of the paper missing. It does not effect the text at all, but many of the pages are like this. Not to mention the book smells horrible, like an old musty smell. It was wrapped well so I know it was damaged before sent.

Should I mark this a rwap? And what do you guys do with a rwap? Do you always ask for a credit back or just leave it be?

It sounds like it might be a deckled edge. They do this to make the paper look fancier.

Deckle edges.

Sometimes I ask for my credit back, but most times I don't.  While I can't repost a RWAP book, I often can read it and then use it in another way.  Give it to a friend or donate it.   Only if I can NOT use the book in any way do I ask for a credit back.

That is NOT a rule, it's just how I do it.

I have been convinced that I should mark any book that doesn't meet guidelines RWAP and do so.

Just with TPTB, it is hard for someone who isn't holding the book to make the judgement on it.  That is why they won't get into individual disputes over the condition of the book.

Unfortunately, smell is not a condition that you can RWAP for. (Unless you have a RC against certain smells).

That leaves the edge of the pages. The rules say that pages cannot be ripped or torn. So, I would think you could RWAP for that, if the book is not a deckle edge, as pictured above.

Honestly, I only ask for my credit back on RWAPs if I can't use the book the way that I intended, or if the RWAP condition is so obvious there is no way that the sender missed the damage.

They are for sure not deckled, it is just quite a few pages in the middle that are torn.  I don't like marking things as a rwap, but I suppose people do need to know what is unacceptable.   I agree about the credit, the book is readable, I would rather just let the member know it is not acceptable to post.

Thank you for your help .
