Leopold was not some "radical environmentalist" as some might think, but was a very practical conservationist who cared deeply about the natural cycle of life and interconnectedness of all creatures (and man). When he explains (in simple terms) what it takes to create one inch of topsoil, you realize how profoundly important it is for us to be good stewards of this earth so that future generations may reap its benefits also. A very readable and highly influential work - I hope a lot more people will discover it.
