WWII was class warfare as much as it was racial and nationalistic warfare. This sad fact is evidenced in an excellent scene Hassel draws up in this book, where some German private's are mistreating a Russian Major or General or something (sorry, read it a year or two ago) and they are seriously reprimanded for their activity by a German of similar rank to the hated Russian officer. Class warfare at its most basic and brutal existence. Tough and raw combat book to read. You feel you're there (like I felt I had to shower the jungle off of me every time I put down James Jones' The Thin Red Line) in Hassel's brilliantly basic writing. Read his books if you're into this genre.
