I remember it being decent space opera.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. This is the first in a fairly long series featuring the character "Sten". The writing is very masculin, but not too raunchy or grunty. There was some fairly good character development, although there is definitely room for more of that in the other books. If I'm in a military sci-fi action type mood again, I'll probably pick up the others.

First book in the Sten series. One of the best series you have never read.

I was really disappointed by this book. From the reviews I read at various sources I thought it would be similar to the ORPHAN series. However, the main character comes across to me more like a sociopath than a hardened hero whose mettle was forged in the ashes of adversity.
