When Naomi Roth pulls the body of a stabbed infant girl from the Sabbathday River, she precipitates an investigation that devastates the small New Hampshire town she hoped to save. Smart and engrossing, this thriller addresses the complex morality behind its characters' behavior with gravity and deep humanity. Idealistic Vista volunteer and New York Jewish liberal in search of a cause, Naomi turns local crafts into a booming catalogue business by the mid-'80s but never quite fits into the tightly knit New England community whose secrets unravel as townsfolk point fingers?mostly at Heather Pratt, the proud and lonely girl who delicately embroiders traditional samplers and unapologetically bears the illegitimate child of a married man.
A remarkable novel that focuses on the people and life in a New England town. The characters come into more focus as a murder affects the town
This is a wonderfully plotted novel about a story of a murder investigation and the resulting trial in a small New England town. A gripping and rewarding reading.
I really, really loved this one and stayed up 'til the wee hours to finish. Kept me guessing until the last pages.
This was a good, keep you guessing story but it was a little slow.
A very good mystery about a baby found floating in a river. Surprise ending.
New author for me. This is only her second novel...I must get her first immediately!!!
Naomi Roth has lived in New Hampshire for nearly a decade--and she is still an outsider. Also an outsider--though native born--is Heather Pratt a seemingly serene, self-contained young woman who's made the mistake of having an affair with a married man and unapologetically bearing his child.
Now, Naomi has found the body of a newborn baby floating in the Sabbathday River. After suspecting Naomi first, the police have turned their attention to Heather recently rumored to be hiding another scandalous pregnancy. And Heather has confessed. Naomi, convinced that the police arent telling the truth, now believes that Heather isn't either. But as the trial draws near, she has no idea what truths will be revealed--both inside the courtroom and out.
I did not like this book at all.
I got a copy of this book from a freebie box so I decided to try it. I could not get into it. I like mysteries, but this one just couldn't keep my interest.
A bit hard to get into at first, but totally worth it! This book leaves you wondering at the end...what do you believe?
So well written and engaging............you will find it hard to put down!
I have too many books and was never able to read this one.
One of the best books I've ever read! Kept me glued to it turning pages late in the night. Great concept...small town, narrow minded people; enter big city feminist Jewish woman, and a pregnancy and two dead babies and a nasty court trial. Well written with rich characters who were haunted with their own demons, as we all are, but yet get through life as best they can. GREAT read!
