Gladys Mitchell was a contemporary of Agatha Christie. Her books were published in the 1920s and 1930s, then went out of publication. Her works experienced a renaissance in the 1980s and were produced as a PBS series in 1999. I enjoyed this quirky and original murder mystery, featuring the Freudian freelance investigator, Mrs. Bradley. It was published in 1932 and reads like a Britcom. When I went looking for the other Mrs. Bradley novels (65 of them), I actually found one review saying none are more enjoyable than The Saltmarsh Murders! Be prepared for some British jargon and dated social attitudes. But also be prepared for some hysterical repartee and a satisfyingly twisted solution.
