I was a little worried about this. Trevanian was able to completely adopt the voice of a genre and turned out some of my favorite books that were formative for me. So the idea that his daughter/estate hired Winslow to write a prequel to Shibumi? SACRILEGE! :)
However, I have to say the Winslow did an excellent job. The voice was reminiscent of the master without being a predictable clone. The bones of Nicholai Hel's history are nicely fleshed out, we get to meet younger versions of favorite (and despised) characters and there was just enough tongue in cheek humor and sex.
If you haven't read Shibumi, by all means read it first. If you are a Trevanian fan, enjoy Satori as the homage it is.
