Scanlon is a product of the depression, toughened by three years on a Pennsylv... more »ania oil pipe line crew, and tossed into a world wide conflict. He provides an intimate enlisted man's view of WW II military life and in particular the contributions of draftees from rural America's working class families.
His adventures stretch from a pre-Pearl Harbor draft notice to a Tech Sergeant's experiences as a P-38 mechanic with the 94th Fighter Squadron in the North African and Italian Campaigns. He came ashore with Eisenhower and Patton in the Operation Torch invasion of North Africa carrying the company safe and trying not to drown.
